At the prestigious CES 2025 technology show, Intel unveiled its latest mobile chips aimed at commercial PC users. This news, the Intel Core Ultra 200V series of processors, comes at a time when businesses are expected to make a massive transition to Windows 11 thanks to the end of support for Windows 10, which could significantly boost chip and device sales.

The Intel Core Ultra 200V, the second generation of Core Ultra processors, brings improvements in performance, battery life and the ability to process AI tasks directly on the device. While the consumer model was launched back in September, these processors are now making their way to enterprise customers.

The AI and power efficiency improvements are in response to competition from AMD and Qualcomm. AMD already introduced its AI Pro 300 series in October, while Qualcomm is making progress with its Snapdragon X Elite chips for Windows PCs.

According to David Feng, vice president of Intel's Client Computing Group, Core Ultra 200V laptops will offer up to 10.5 hours of battery life when using Microsoft Teams and 20.3 hours when working in Microsoft 365. In contrast, the AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360 can handle 6.1 hours on Teams and 13.5 hours on Microsoft 365. Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite achieved 9.2 hours on Teams and 18.5 hours on Microsoft 365, as reported by Intel $INTC.

Benefits of on-device AI

Intel Core Ultra 200V processors enable more efficient on-device AI applications, which provides greater security and data privacy as there is no need to send information to web servers. The technology also supports Microsoft's Copilot+PC standard, which means smoother operation of features such as Windows Recall, which allows users to easily retrieve past activities.

Strategy for 2025

In addition to technological innovation, Intel is banking on the impending end of Windows 10 support to force many enterprise customers to migrate to newer systems and hardware. As David Feng said: "2025 will be a year of renewal driven by innovation. We are working with Microsoft to accelerate the transition of businesses to Windows 11 and make the most of AI in the Microsoft and Intel ecosystem."

Challenges

The new chips come at a critical time for Intel, which is facing pressure not only from competitors but also internally. The company replaced its CEO Pat Gelsinger in December after a 60% drop in its share price over the past year. Intel is also continuing its costly transition to a third-party chipmaker, which has yet to deliver the expected profits, despite the company's major deals with Microsoft and Amazon.

If Intel wants to have a more successful 2025, the key will be to increase chip sales, especially in the enterprise sector, where the Core Ultra 200V could play a major role.
