Costco faces criticism: Why won't it get out of the way?
Costco, known for its unique wholesale shopping concept, has decided to strongly defend its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Unlike other companies such as Walmart or John Deere that are changing or even abandoning their DEI strategies, Costco refuses to cave to pressure from conservative activists. Why does Costco consider DEI a key element of its success and how does it respond to criticism?

$COST found itself in the spotlight after its board of directors unanimously recommended that shareholders vote against a proposal by the conservative think tank National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR). This proposal called for Costco to evaluate and issue a report on the financial risks associated with maintaining its DEI goals. The think-tank argued that Costco's DEI practices may constitute "illegal discrimination" against employees who are "white, Asian, male, or heterosexual."
Costco, however, rejected this suggestion as baseless and questioned the motivations of the proponent. According to the company, the NCPPR is trying to hide its real goal - abolishing diversity programs - under the guise of risk protection.
"Petitioner claims to be concerned about the legal and financial risks associated with diversity initiatives. However, the supporting declaration shows that it is the plaintiff and similar groups that are causing problems for companies by challenging long-standing diversity programs," Costco said.
DEI as part of corporate identity
Costco considers DEI a key part of its corporate culture and strategy. The company has a chief diversity officer and a special program to encourage collaboration with small and diverse suppliers. In addition, it contributes to organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund that support minorities and underrepresented groups.
Costco emphasizes that diversity among employees brings original and creative approaches to merchandise offerings, which supports their unique "treasure hunt" concept - customers never know what interesting products they will discover. The company also says that members appreciate the opportunity to meet a diverse staff that reflects their own experiences and values.
"A diverse group of staff helps bring originality and creativity to our merchandise offering, which supports the 'treasure hunt' that our customers appreciate," Costco said in an official statement.
Bucking the trend
At a time when many companies are scaling back their DEI activities under pressure from the public or conservative groups, Costco is standing firm. Some companies are changing their terminology from "DEI" to "inclusiveness" or "belonging" to reduce the visibility of these initiatives, but Costco sees diversity as integral to its success.
Despite the criticism, Costco is trying to show that diversity and inclusion are not only morally right, but also contribute to long-term business growth. Their strategy could serve as an inspiration for other companies to resist pressures and promote values that bring social as well as economic benefits.
